Carmine Auricchio
January 9, 1938 ~ April 21, 1999

Carmine passed away on Wednesday. Carmine had been suffering from cancer for a while now. He put up a gallant fight but, as we all know, once the cancer grabs you it is very difficult to break its grip. I saw him last at Snake's birthday party. You could tell he was hurting but he was out with his friends enjoying life.

Carmine was more than just the Treasurer for our chapter. Although he served in that board position for 4 years, he was often a contributor to the humor, guidance and soul of the group. He tirelessly guided the business functions of The Southeast Chapter and he often chimed in with common sense insight to questions in our chapter meetings. More than once Carmine shared a bit of his wisdom with me.

Carmine will be sorely missed. From what I personally know of him and the way our entire chapter happily greeted him at all of our events, it is easy to tell he was well liked. He shared the dedication to personal freedom, freedom of the road and freedom of choice ABATE is embodied by.

For this is a journey

I had the pleasure of knowing Carmine for more than 4 years of my short life, and as many of the people in ABATE, he left an indelible impression on me. Carmine was always smiling, and never had a poor word for you, unless it was in jest. Due to my own illness, I was not present at the last 3 meetings and did not hear about Carmine's passing until now, and for that I am sad. I wish I could have seen him once more. You only meet a few good souls in your life, and it is my belief that Carmine was one.
Thank you Carmine for being in my life, however brief.  And, may the wind be forever at your back.

To all of the thoughtful people that attended my father, Carmine's services,
If you did not receive a personal thank you or you did not leave your address in the sign-in book; I would like to take a moment from this hectic time to thank you now. There was such an outpouring of sympathy, it was evident my father was well loved. I can say that easily from the number of donations to the Joe De Maggio fund and the cards, letters and comments. A wealth of people have come forward to help all of us in the family in our time of sorrow. I thank all of you for supporting us in your own way. I'm sure my father is smiling with the knowledge of all of your well wishes.

Our grandfather Carmine was not only a great man to us but he was a terrific man to everyone. He always helped anyone that needed it. We all remember going to his house and catching baby tad poles in his lake behind his house and playing with his dog Pepsi.  If we could have changed anything in the world we would have liked to spend more time with him. We miss him so much.
